Yield farming is how DeFi protocols rent liquidity. By supplying your tokens — often to a liquidity pool — you earn a share of fees plus, frequently, extra token rewards. The headline APYs can be eye-watering, but understanding where the yield actually comes from is what separates a sustainable return from a trap.

Where the yield comes from

Yield has two sources. The first is organic: the swap fees a liquidity pool pays its providers. The second is incentive-based: protocols mint their own governance tokens and hand them to liquidity providers to bootstrap depth. This second source is what “liquidity mining” usually refers to.

Why APYs can be misleading

A 200% APY quoted in a protocol’s own token is only worth 200% if that token holds its value. As rewards are farmed and sold, emission-heavy tokens often fall faster than the yield accrues, leaving farmers with a large number of nearly worthless tokens. Always separate the fee yield from the incentive yield, and price the incentive in what it is actually worth.
